It was "Bandrol" in Kullu where for the first time apple trees were disseminated in HP by the Britishers and not in "kotgarh"region of Shimla. The diffrence between British and American variety is that the former is sour in taste where as the second one is sweet and delecious. In Bandrol it was Mr.Lee who nurtured it over there,Mr.Benon did the same ... See Morein Manali,in Katrain it was Mr.Tyson,in Dobhi area Mr.Mackdonal ,also known as Dalan Sahib,in Naggar area it was Col.Ronick(lateron his orchrids were owned by Birla estate). All credit for contributing the apple orchirds in Kullu valley in fact goes to all these ex.Britishers.
The Deprtment of Horticuluture ,GoHP have imported the root stocks of varities like Scarlet spur, Oregon spur, Gale Gala, golden delicious, Gibson golden, early red and B-7-11 and have been distributed among the farmers so far.But all these new American varities is said to be successful at the height of 4500-5500 feet above the sea level. There is a lot of rush going on to get these varieties but only time will tell if they succeed in the Kullu conditions.
